Abraham Lincoln: Manchester Remembers
In 2009 the United States celebrates the Lincoln Bicentennial, marking the 200th
anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was born in 1809 in Kentucky
and rose from obscurity and poverty to become the 16th President
of the United States (1861-1865). He led during an era marked with immense
challenges for his country, which was plunged into the Civil War over issues of
race and national identity. Lincoln’s legacy as a brilliant leader at a crossroad
in American history, and his personal story as a complex “man of the people,” remain
sources of inspiration and debate today. The Manchester Historic Association is
pleased to be joining in the Lincoln Bicentennial celebration with a special
exhibit,Abraham Lincoln:
Manchester Remembers.

Concert
The Yankee Brass Band
Saturday, July 25, 2009
6:00 p.m.
FREE Admission
At the bandstand in Stark Park (rain location: Manchester Community Music School)
Bring your blanket and chairs, pack a picnic, and join us in Stark Park to hear the music of the
Yankee Brass Band. Led by music director Paul Maybery, the band is a historically-accurate re-creation
of an American brass band circa 1840-1870. The band performs music of the period in an appropriate
style and on the authentic instruments. Band members dress in attire that was common
for the era and give their audience a glimpse into the traditions of historic American band music.
The Yankee Brass Band includes members of the 12th NHV Serenade Band that has performed both
at Stark Park and at the Millyard Museum. This concert is presented in collaboration with the Friends
of Stark Park, in honor of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial. This event is generously
sponsored by the Smyth Trust.
The Band will perform on the park's beautiful new Hector Hastings Bandstand. For information about
the Friends of Stark Park, the bandstand project, and other concerts and events
scheduled in the park this summer, check out
their website.
