In the 1840s and 1850s, residents who were to become mayors, governors, U.S. Congressmen, and industrialists lived here. Historians John Jordan and Richard Duckoff will focus on the neighborhood clustered on Lowell, Walnut, Bridge, Union, and Beech Streets. Some familiar names: Carpenter, Varney, and Varick, lived here during their careers. Meet up at 88 Lowell St., at brick building at corner of Chestnut and Lowell Streets at start of tour.
